Unsung heroes awarded twice

We were delighted to receive two awards at two different events on Tuesday this week!

Volunteers of The Link Visiting Scheme visit older people who are struggling with the serious impact of loneliness. Unsung heroes who offer support and kindness to those who often feel overlooked and invisible.

The Berkshire High Sheriff, Alka Kharbanda has chosen ‘unsung heroes’ as her theme this year and wanted to recognise the special work that the Link Visiting volunteers do throughout the borough with special recognition for the Link Online project volunteers who offer one-to-one coaching and support to those who want help digitally either with their own device or with a device loaned to them.

Link Online volunteers have helped older people video call family members who live far afield, they’ve helped people access medical appointments online or investigate lifelong hobbies. With their patience and support, older people feel more connected and less excluded.

‘I can now see my daughter in America via WhatsApp and my volunteer showed me the road she lives on via google maps! We even visited all the houses I’d lived in throughout my life on the computer. It’s opened up a new world!’

On the same evening, at an event hosted by Wokingham Borough Council and attended by 40+ other local organisations, Link Visiting were presented with an award from The Mayor of Wokingham Borough Cllr Caroline Smith. It was in recognition for outstanding commitment and contribution to Wokingham Borough. Nominator Lucy Zeal DL wrote:

‘I am nominating the Link Visiting Scheme for the outstanding contribution they make to the Wokingham Borough community.  I feel the hard work of their staff, volunteers and trustees deserves to be recognised.

The Link is dedicated to reducing loneliness in Wokingham Borough.  For over 25 years, they’ve brought vital, life-enhancing social connections to older people through regular visits and community activities. With the support of over 420 volunteers, they currently help over 550 people feel valued and connected.

Our volunteers give the best gift of all, their time and attention. When you are feeling lonely, this gift can literally save lives. We know what brilliant work our volunteers do but it is a fantastic morale boost for our charity to be recognised in this way. We are delighted on behalf of all who volunteer for us.
